The Audition Speech

Hello ladies and Gentlemen.  Thank you all for coming out to audition for our Christmas, (Easter, etc.), program.  Before we get started I want to tell everyone how I hate auditions!  I do!  I hate auditions!  Why?  Because here is exactly what’s going to happen.  I am going to give you material to perform.  You will stand up here and give it your all!  Then I will decide who gets a part and who doesn’t.  If you get a part you will be happy.  If you don’t get a part, you will be sad.  You’re feelings will be hurt.  How do I know?  Because, when I audition for a part, and don’t get it, my feelings are always hurt.  So, I understand that your feelings will be hurt also.  But you must realize what I, as a director, I am doing several things.  They are:

1.   I am judging your performance.  But my judgment, just like your judgment is very subjective.  What I perceive about someone’s performance will be different than what you perceive about that same performance.

2.   I am judging your physical look against the physical look I have envisioned for the characters.   While you are standing up here giving it your all, I am going to be watching you.  I am going to be judging you on your performance

3.   I am judging your physical look against the physical look I have with the other members.  Do you need to be a couple.  If so, how does you partner look with you.  Would you make a nice couple that the audience would want to see together?

So, know that I am judging you on several things that are out of your control.  Now, here's my problem.  You are my friends.  I am going to hurt someone's feeling.  I'm sorry.  I don't know who's feelings I will be hurting, but I'm telling you, this will be difficult for me.  I will choose based on what I think is best for the show.  But remember, I have a broader picture of what is best for the show.  I will never give someone a part because they are my friends.  Never.  It's always what I perceive as being best for the show.  So, to you that do not get a part or the part you want, I'm sorry.
